WSU Writing Program Presents Findings of Biennial Report on Junior Writing Portfolio (2007-2009)

WSU undergraduates are, or are on course to be, very good communicators through their writing, according to the most recent report on the university's required Writing Portfolio (2007-2009), a requirement for juniors.  The report was based on a record-breaking number of more than 9,800 portfolios submitted from summer 2007 to summer 2009, showed that 90 percent of all students earn "pass" or better on their portfolio and 9.5 percent of those earned "writing with distinction" notations, and offered evidence that the range of courses from which the portfolio writing samples were drawn was broadening significantly.  More>>

Students Writing about Renting, Musical Performances, and Light Pollution Concerns Enjoy Lunch with WSU President Elson S. Floyd Nov. 12

Proving the power of the pen, undergraduates who recently wrote the best letters detailing issues and solutions to perceived problems at WSU were invited to lunch Thursday, Nov. 12, by President Elson S. Floyd.  He wanted to hear more.  Seniors Katie Merz, Emily Cragerud, and Graham Dart were invited, as representatives of their teams of students in sections of English 402 (Technical and Professional Writing), taught by Donna Evans, a third-year doctoral student in rhetoric and composition.  About 40 letters were submitted by students about perceived problems at WSU and proposed solutions, as part of "Cougs the Write Way" events on the National Day of Writing.  More>>

WSU Writing Program Joins National Day on Writing with Three "Cougs the Write Way" Events Oct. 20

Whether by drafting letters of concern to Washington State University President Elson S. Floyd, emoting cursively on a special wall in the Compton Union Building (CUB), or composing poetry, the WSU Writing Program is encouraging students to—quite literally—put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) on Tuesday, Oct. 20. [NOTE: the letter-writing contest deadline was extended from Oct. 20 to Oct. 27.] More>>

WSU Writing Program Ranked Among "Best" by U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges 2010" 

In its 25th year, the Writing Program that impacts literally every student at Washington State University has received a ranking placing it among the best in the nation.  In the 2010 edition of "America's Best Colleges," by U.S. News & World Report, the Writing Program appears in the "Academic Programs to Look For" section in the "Writing in the Disciplines" category.  It is the seventh time in nine years of rankings that the acclaimed program has ranked "best."  In its company this year are 21 universities, including Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Purdue, and Cornell.  Of the 22 listed, WSU is the only Washington school and is one of four from the West (along with UCLA, Colorado State, and Stanford.)  More>>

WSU Writing Program Presents at National WPA Conference; Patrick Johnson Lands "Best Poster" Award

Four members of the Writing Program at Washington State University shared information on program efficiency, e-tutoring, and student accountability at the 2009 national conference of the Council of Writing Program Administrators (WPA) July 16-19 in Minneapolis, MN.  Staff member Patrick Johnson’s presentation detailing the online tutoring service available to WSU students won the award for best poster.  More>>

Writing Across the Curriculum Workshop on "Wine Tasting as a Metaphor for Responding to Student Writing" Set for May 9, 2009

WSU Writing Program Receives National Certificate of Excellence (2009)

More national recognition is coming to the WSU Writing Program.  In March, the Writing Program will receive the "Writing Program Certificate of Excellence" for its university-wide accomplishments.  The award will be presented at the national meeting of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, which commended WSU's program for its "remarkably successful assessment program, its remarkable inclusiveness, and its ability to sustain its excellence in the face of change."  More>>

Writing Across the Curriculum Workshop on "Academic Integrity and Generation Napster" Set for Dec. 16, 2008

The Writing Program's semester workshop for Fall 2008 will explore the meaning of authorship "amidst the file-sharing pandemic."  Workshop topics will include: "Plagiarism and Academic Integrity;" "Resources for Faculty and Students;" "Syllabus and Assignment Design;" and "Conveying the Meaning of Authorship."  The workshops are from 9 a.m. - noon and lunch following.  RSVPs should be to Sharolon Carter at 335-5898 or sharolon@wsu.edu.   More>>
