Our Vision
The Washington State University Writing Program will use sound instructional theory and thoughtful human diplomacy to provide and promote opportunities for learner-centered engagement in and around written communication, critical thinking, and information literacy.
Our Mission
The Writing Program strives to enhance the education of WSU students in collaboration with current and future faculty by engaging in inclusive, sustainable, learn-by-doing instructional practices and responsive assessments calibrated to the varied needs of students, faculty, the university community, and external constituents.
Our Goals
- To offer writing tutorial support services to students.
- To promote a cooperative spirit among and between students, faculty, and administrators.
- To design synergistic and sustainable learning environments that use minimal resources for maximal instructional benefit to students and faculty.
- To recognize and respect "zones of proximal development" for all learners, including faculty seeking to be better teachers.
- To implement critical thinking and writing in the disciplines.
- To facilitate discussions that explore the centrality of writing, reading, critical thinking, and information literacy in the academic life of the university.
- To promote effective strategies for assigning and responding to writing.
- To continue to assess the writing of students at the beginning and midpoint of their college experience, providing help for students who need it as well as recognition of high achievement.
- To design and sustain responsive assignments that provide information that helps faculty improve curriculum and instruction, and that helps the university more efficiently allocate resources.
