Evaluating Students' Writing Throughout College
At WSU, all students will have many opportunities to express in writing their knowledge and critical thinking about topics. A recent survey said that WSU students write an average of 10 major papers each year.
The university created the Writing Assessment Program in 1991 to help students find where they stand in relation to their college peers. Now part of the Writing Program in the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Writing Assessment Program is responsible for three core functions:
- Assessing freshmen through the Writing Placement Exam (or the Honors College Writing Diagnostic)
- Administering the Junior Writing Portfolio to determine students' preparedness to communicate in their major
- Evaluating periodically students' performance overall on the WSU Junior Writing Portfolio and preparing statistical reports on the results
