Group tutorials aim to provide maximum writing assistance in connection with a particular level of course work.
The Writing Program offers the following 1-credit writing groups: English 102, English 202, and Gen Ed 302. Each of these groups are designed to complement writing intensive courses. You can add one of these groups just as you would add a class.
English 102 "Writing Tutorial"
Course Description:
English 102 is a small group, one-credit writing tutorial available to lower division students who want to work in a small writing group with an experienced facilitator. The course is designed to serve students concurrently enrolled in English 101 or English 105. The course helps students work on strategies to meet the challenges of academic writing required in English 101 (e.g. focus, organization, support, style, and mechanics) and English 105 (e.g. grammar, syntax, and Western academic styles of writing). Students may be placed into English 102 if they demonstrate on the Writing Placement Exam that they need assistance in at least two of those areas.
Course Objectives:
-
The help students develop the skills needed to effectively recognize and respond to strengths and weaknesses in writing.
-
To give students the opportunity to learn how to give and accept critical feedback on writing.
-
To encourage an atmosphere of effective peer collaboration.
English 202 "Grammar in Context"
Course Description:
English 202 is a small group, one-credit writing tutorial that focuses specifically on the grammatical conventions of Standard Edited American English (SEAE) by examining the writing students bring to the tutorial. Each group is facilitated by and experienced tutor (rather than taught by an instructor). The tutor’s function is to assist the group members in fulfilling the course objectives. English 202 is not a stand-alone course. You must be concurrently enrolled in another writing course. Some students may be placed into this course based on requirements for the Junior Writing Portfolio.
Course Objectives:
-
To provide writing support for students enrolled in writing intensive courses.
-
To help students analyze their own patterns of unconventional usage of surface grammatical features and structures of SEAE, and through identification of those patterns, to help them achieve conventional usage.
-
To give students the opportunity to learn how to give and accept critical feedback on writing.
Gen Ed 302 "Advanced Writing Tutorial"
Course Description:
Gen Ed 302 is a small group, one-credit writing tutorial designed to provide writing support for students enrolled in their Writing in the Major [M] courses, or any upper-division writing intensive course. Each group is facilitated by an experienced tutor rather than taught by an instructor. The tutor’s function is to assist the group members in learning and developing strategies for approaching and completing writing tasks. As with all writers’ groups, this means that the motivation for learning in this setting comes from the students. These writers’ groups will focus on evaluating writing, giving and receiving feedback, discovering and practicing discipline-specific rhetorical skills, critical thinking, conventions, revision strategies, and proofreading. Gen Ed 302 is not a stand-alone course. You must be concurrently enrolled in another writing course. Some students may be placed into this course based on requirements for the Junior Writing Portfolio.
Course Objectives:
-

-
To provide students with writing practice that is relevant to their major course of study and/or their professional goals.
-
To give students the opportunity to learn how to give and accept critical feedback on writing.
-
To help student students internalize the criteria for successful writing.
