Faculty Brown Bags
The Writing Program Brown Bag Series is an endowed initiative within the Writing Program that compensates faculty for participating in an evolving conversation about teaching writing in the disciplines. The Brown Bag conversations are facilitated by the Director of the Writing Program who offers professional expertise, experience, and insights and provides instructional materials as they are relevant to the evolving conversation.
The Writing Program Brown Bag series consists of 10 discussion-based sessions (one meeting each week for 10 weeks) where a small cohort of faculty gathers to talk about challenges and brainstorm solutions related to teaching writing in their courses. Each session is fifty-five minutes long and is compensated at $35.00. Compensation is delivered at the end of the 10-week session, calculated on the number of sessions attended. Participants are asked to commit to attending at least 8 of the 10 sessions in order to maintain a coherent conversation across the 10-week series.

While we believe the discipline-specific or department-specific cohort offers important collaborative and co-learning opportunities, we will gladly add you individually to an existing or future cohort.
We try our best to find a meeting time that works for everyone hoping to participate. The series runs for eight to ten weeks. We do occasionally extend into the early evening hours, but we aim for weekly meetings during the 9 – 5 window. Because of the complexity of scheduling, we try to plan with cohorts well in advance of the start of their brown bag series.
Not at all. From short reflective assignments to in-depth scholarly papers, writing is present in most college courses, and this faculty development experience is designed to support you in effectively and equitably teaching with and assessing writing in your courses.
