What Do Writing Center Consultants Do?
Writing center consultants are peer tutors who support writers with tasks such as understanding assignment prompts, brainstorming and organizing ideas, drafting, revising, and editing. Common projects include course papers, lab reports, resumes, and personal statements. Tutors work in a supportive, student-centered environment that values strong communication, collaboration, and inclusivity. Our consultants also deliver writing workshops to small groups and classes as needed.
Work commitment: Writing consultants work 4 – 8 hours per week during their first semester of employment. In subsequent semesters, they work 4 – 12 hours per week, depending on their own schedules and shift availability. Shifts take place Monday through Friday, 10 am – 7 pm, more or less.
Writing consultants must comply with FERPA requirements as it pertains to personal and confidential information.
Qualifications
- Current undergraduate student enrolled at WSU
- Minimum 3.0 GPA (we may ask for transcripts after you apply)
- Willingness to submit verification of your writing skills and expertise (see “How to Apply”)
- Willingness to enroll in a mandatory 1-credit hour tutor training course (WRITE 431) during the first semester of employment and to complete mandatory in-person trainings within your first year of employment
You Might Be the Right Candidate If…
You don’t need to be an expert in every subject, but you’re willing to work with writers from any major or class. You are excited to work with a lot of different people from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. You’re excited about writing and engaging in collaborative meaning-making. You like learning about others’ relationship with writing. You have strong communication skills, are interested in developing your interpersonal skills, are dependable and professional, and open to growing professionally and personally. You’re willing to complete all required training. - A resume and 1-page cover letter telling us about you, your writing experience, and why you’d like to be a writing consultant with us.
- The contact information (name and email) of at least 1 reference. This needs to be someone who can attest to your writing expertise. We accept a wide variety of references, from former instructors to work supervisors (they don’t have to be faculty). We will send this reference a form to submit (you don’t need to submit a formal letter of recommendation).
- A sample paper or other written document to showcase your writing expertise.
- We accept a wide variety of samples, from lab reports to research papers.
- We prefer papers or written documents you’ve submitted for a college-level class.
- We prefer papers or documents that earned at least a B grade.
- Note: We may ask for transcripts at a later date to confirm your GPA.

Information about this job:
We employ approximately 25 undergraduate writing consultants each term. Consultants can remain on staff throughout their undergrad program, so long as they meet the job expectations. We hire 2 – 8 consultants per term, depending on staff turnover.
Writing consultants work 4 – 8 hours per week during their first semester of employment. In subsequent semesters, they work 4 – 12 hours per week, depending on their own schedules and shift availability. Shifts take place Monday through Friday, 10 am – 7 pm, more or less.
New consultants take Write 431 (1-cr) within the first year of their job. New consultants receive on-the-job mentoring from peer leaders on staff. All consultants are expected to participate in at least 6 hours of paid professional development each term, as offered by the Writing Center admin.
