What happens in a writing consultation?

Writing Center sessions are conversations about your writing. Our consultants bring knowledge about writing and revision, and you bring knowledge about your assignment and ideas. Talking about your writing with another person can help you clarify your thinking, refine your message, and generate ideas. It can also help you understand what your strengths are as a writer and figure out what out to do you feel stuck. Talking about writing is just as important as, well, writing!

The Writing Center is for all writers, not just students who are struggling with their writing, though we’re here for them, too! Our consultants work with students from every major to help them clarify, develop, and communicate their ideas.

You can visit us for help at any stage of the writing process! You don’t need a final draft to visit us!

We offer both drop-in consultations and appointments. When you arrive at the center, you’ll work with a peer writing consultant in a welcoming environment. During a session, you and the consultant will take a few minutes to establish your goals for the session. A typical sessions might involve talking through your goals for the assignment, reading parts of your draft together, and discussing strategies for revision.

Sessions typically last anywhere from a few minutes (for those quick questions) to 30 minutes, and you’re always welcome to stay, write, and ask follow-up questions.

New: Book an appointment with us!

The Writing Center now offers appointments!

You don’t have to book an appointment to visit the writing center. You can drop in whenever we’re open. However, we know that students are busy and may have limited time in their schedule. We’ve listened to your feedback and now offer appointments so we can guarantee that a consultant will be available during a time that works best for you.

How does it work? You can book an appointment 1-7 days in advance. We require that you book at least 24 hours in advance to ensure we’ll have consultants available for you. You’ll receive a confirmation email. And that’s it! Simply show up at your appointment time.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Sessions typically last a few minutes up to 30 minutes.
  • We book for 30 minute sessions at a time, but you’re welcome to hang out and write in the center after your session is over.
  • You can cancel your appointment at any time by clicking the link in your confirmation email.
  • We ask that you cancel as soon as you know you won’t be able to make it.
  • If you’re 15 minutes late for your appointment, we’ll ask you to reschedule.

We’re in the Smith CUE room 303.

Monday – Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Friday 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

If you book an appointment between 5:00 p.m .and 7:00 p.m., your session will be in the Terrell Library Cougar Commons by the “writing” pillar. Look for our table sign.

Submit a Draft for Written Feedback

If you can’t visit the Writing Center in person, you can submit a draft for written feedback from one of our consultants. A consultant will read your draft and provide comments, questions, and suggestions to help you revise and continue developing your work.

This Service Works Best When

  • You have a partial or full draft
  • You have time to revise
  • You include specific questions for the consultant

Because consultants review many drafts, submitting a shorter section of a longer paper often leads to more detailed feedback.

What Kind of Feedback You’ll Receive

Consultants focus on helping writers develop ideas and revise effectively rather than editing or rewriting sentences. Consultants typically provide:

  • Comments and questions in the margins
  • Suggestions for revision and development
  • Resources you can use as you revise

When You’ll Receive Feedback

  • Consultants review drafts on weekdays.
  • Most submissions receive feedback within 48 hours.Requests submitted Friday or over the weekend will typically be returned by Tuesday.
  • This service works best when you have time to revise after receiving feedback.

Who Can Use This Service

This service is available to undergraduate students at Washington State University. Graduate students should work with the Graduate Writing Center.

Alternative support: eTutoringOnline.org.

If you need help in the evenings, on the weekends, or over university breaks, you can access eTutoringOnline.org. All WSU students are allowed to use eTutoring for support on their writing. The eTutoring platform has two types of support: live chats with writing tutors and written feedback on drafts.
