Our Impact
The Writing Center supports hundreds of students each semester and we continue to see growing demand for our services.
Impact Snapshot
Demand for Writing Center support increases steadily throughout the semester, with many days reaching full capacity. During peak times, consultants often work with multiple students, and space in the center fills quickly.
- 400+ student visits in Fall 2025
- Steady weekly growth in Spring 2026 usage
- 10–15% of students return for additional sessions
- 20 trained consultants supporting writers
Students frequently remain in the center after their sessions to continue working, demonstrating our inclusive, supportive environment and creating a strong culture of writing.
Cougs Supporting Cougs
The Writing Center uses a peer tutoring model, where trained student consultants work one-on-one with other students. This approach creates a collaborative, approachable environment where writers can talk through their ideas with someone who understands the challenges of college writing.
Rather than editing papers, consultants guide writers through the process of developing ideas, strengthening arguments, and revising effectively. Through conversation and feedback, students learn strategies they can apply to future writing projects.
Peer tutoring is widely recognized as a high-impact educational practice because it supports both the writer and the consultant: writers gain confidence and stronger writing skills, while consultants develop communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills.
Serving Writers Across the University
Writing Center clients represent students at all levels, from first-year writers to those completing capstone projects and undergraduate theses. Students visit the center for writing in a wide range of fields, including the humanities, STEM disciplines, and professional programs, highlighting the Writing Center’s role as a campus-wide academic resource.
In consultations, students work on:
- understanding assignment expectations
- developing and refining ideas
- strengthening arguments and use of evidence
- improving clarity and organization
These sessions help students become more confident and independent writers.
