Frequently Asked Questions about the Undergraduate Writing Center
The Undergraduate Writing Center is a free service, open to all WSU undergraduate students. Graduate students are invited to use the Graduate Writing Center.
Yes! We offer asynchronous feedback on written drafts for Global students. In Fall 2026, we plan to offer synchronous, online appointments as well.
Our consulting sessions last for 30 minutes. For asynchronous feedback, our consultants will review 5 pages at a time or for 30 minutes at at time, whichever comes first. Your consultant will send your draft back with margin comments showing which pages they reviewed. If you’d like to resubmit to have the next 5 pages reviewed, please resubmit and attach this document so consultants know where they left off.
In the past, the Writing Center limited the use of our asynchronous service to three times per semester. However, we changed this in 2026. There’s currently no limit on how many times you can use the asynchronous service. This allows us to offer good consulting services on larger documents and to help students develop ideas and drafts over time.
As many times as you’d like! There’s no limit on the number of times you can use the Writing Center.
No! We can work with you on any stage of the writing process, from understanding the assignment prompt, to brainstorming ideas, to revising, and the final polish. We encourage you to come as early as you can in the writing process and visit with us often, but we’re also happy to help you if you’re in the final phases of your project.
We help with every kind of paper or writing project, including research papers and essays, personal statements and resumes, lab reports and other technical writing, and undergraduate theses and capstone projects.
Yes! We often help WSU students with personal statements, scholarship essays, and resumes. We’re happy to help with any project.
You can drop in any time during our open hours. We also now offer appointments! You can learn more about appointments on our Writing support for students page.
It is always helpful to have the instructions or prompt for whatever it is you’re working on. We recommend that you bring your notes or draft of your document, the assignment prompt, and the rubric if you have it. You can also bring previous comments or feedback from your professor or a previous consultation. You can also just bring your ideas and questions.
Writing Center consultations are based on a peer-to-peer tutoring model. Our consultants will talk with you about your assignment, your ideas, your draft, and your goals or concerns. Together, you’ll decide on a focus for your session, then you and the consultant will work through your project and questions together. You and the consultant might spend the entire session talking about the prompt and your ideas, or you might spend most of the session looking at your draft and talking about it. Consultations vary depending on your needs and where you’re at in the writing process. All consultations are interactive and collaborative.
Depending on your needs, yes, but you can also come back as many times as you’d need or like. If you are working on a big project or paper you might want to meet with a consultant a few times. You can always start with one consultation and see how it goes.
Yes! You’re more than welcome to come write with us, even if you’re not sure if you need a writing consultant’s help. You can work in the center and we’ll be here if you need us.
There are no bad writers! The Writing Center is for everyone, for writers who struggle and for those who just want a second perspective. We’re here for every writer, every draft, any class!
If you’re not sure why your professor wants you to come in, ask them more information. You can also set your own goals for the consultation. You can bring the assignment description, rubric, paper, and professor’s feedback to discuss with your consultant. If you’re feeling lost, don’t worry. As long as you’re open to working with our consultants, we can help you figure out what you’d like to focus on.
Yes, we can verify your visit as long as you completed a consultation. If you met with a consultant and worked with them, we can fill out a card with a date and time to show your professor.
No. We are not an editing or proofreading service. We’ll give you lots of guidance and support, but you ultimately do the work.
We have consultants available in the evenings in the Terrell Library Cougar Commons. They’re there from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. You can also submit a draft asynchronously for written feedback (see Writing Support for Students for more information). You can also access eTutoring.
WSU contracts with eTutoringOnline.org, a consortium of two year- and four- year colleges and universities that provide a pool of online tutors. If you need help in the evenings, on the weekends, or over university breaks, you can access eTutoringOnline.org. All WSU students are allowed to use eTutoring for support on their writing. The eTutoring platform has two types of support: live chats with writing tutors and written feedback on drafts.
